The Art of Quitting: A Guide to extra-Ordinary Leadership

Welcome to another insightful session on the journey towards extra-ordinary leadership. This week we delve into a crucial aspect that often gets overlooked – the power of quitting. Yes, you read it right – quitting!

The Mirror Moment: An Audit of Reality

Becoming an extra-ordinary leader starts with a profound self-audit, what I like to call the 'mirror moment.' It's that introspective moment where you look deep within to discern where the ordinary ends and the extra-ordinary begins. My own mirror moment occurred five years ago during a retreat, sparking a transformative journey towards embracing the forgotten and forsaken parts of myself.

The Importance of Quitting

So, why focus on quitting? Well, in our current reality, whether it's subpar, great, or somewhere in between, auditing our habits and beliefs becomes paramount. What are those patterns and mindsets that keep us tethered to the ordinary, preventing us from reaching the extra-ordinary?

Examples of Quitting for extra-Ordinary Leadership

Five years ago, I made a pivotal decision to quit spending my time in a way that perpetuated ordinary patterns. While responsibilities like raising four children and my day job couldn't be discarded entirely, I started with a small step – quitting one day a week from the ordinary routine. This created space for something extra-ordinary to take root. I took Wednesdays off normal behaviour, found childcare and work cover to free me up to have one day for something “extra.”

Quitting Beliefs: A Change in Mindset

As we audit our beliefs, it's crucial to identify and quit those that keep us bound in the ordinary. Common fixed mindsets include thinking, "This is my lot, and there's nothing I can do." Such beliefs limit our potential. Quitting these mindsets opens doors to a growth mindset, asking, "Where can I free up time for something extra?"

The Sleeping Beauty Curse: Quit Waiting to be Rescued

One powerful belief to quit is the notion that things will sort themselves out magically one day. I refer to this as the 'Sleeping Beauty curse.' Waiting to be rescued or for circumstances to change hinders personal agency. Quit this mindset and recognize that you are the agent of your own change.

Quit Talking, Start Doing

Lastly, quit the habit of merely talking about change without taking action. Talking without doing can create a false sense of progress. Instead, face the reality of where you are, make a plan, and take tangible steps towards the extra-ordinary.

Finally: Embrace the Journey

In conclusion, the path to extra-ordinary leadership involves strategic quitting – shedding beliefs and habits that keep you anchored in the ordinary. Let's commit to embracing the journey, making intentional decisions to quit what holds us back, and stepping into the extra-ordinary.
